Topic: How do I turn on User Portraits or gravatars in Kete?

Topic type:

As of Kete 1.2, if a site decides to support it, users may designate images they upload as portraits of themselves. In addition or alternatively, a Kete site may support gravatars. Here's how to enable that support.

Kete now supports "user portraits". This feature is similar to what are commonly referred to as avatars.  The difference is that Kete users may have more than one and may decide which one is "selected" and acts like an avatar on other sites. This selected portrait will appear next to the user's name wherever they are mentioned on the site.

The user's other portraits will appear on the user's account profile page or on image detail page for an image that has been designated as a user portrait under "other portraits".

Kete sites may also support "gravatars" or global avatars. These are avatars that have been registered at gravatar.com (what wordpress.com uses) for an email address and will automatically retrieved.

You may elect to support either user portraits and gravatars or both. Local user portraits will take precedence over gravatars if both are supported.

Here's how to turn on either of these features in Kete:

  • login as a user that has the Technical Administrator role (i.e. the default administrator account)
  • click on Administrator's Toolbox > reconfigure site link
  • click on Advanced Options
  • click on Accounts
  • replace false with true in the Enable User Portraits field if you want user portraits
  • replace false with true in the Enable Gravatar Portraits field if you want user portraits
  • click Save
  • restart your Kete site application (this takes access to the machine that your site is hosted on)
